Sheikh Saud Al-Shuraim was an Imam and Khateeb at the Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He is highly regarded for his unique recitation style around the world. Sheikh Shuraim resigned from being an imam at the Masjid Al Haram in the early years of 2023.

Early Life and Education

Sheikh Shuraim was born on 19 January 1966, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, into the family of the Haraqees of the Banu Zayd tribe of Saudi Arabia. He holds a PhD degree in Sharia (Islamic studies) at the Umm al-Qura University in Makkah.  Al Shuraim is a dean and “Specialist Professor in Fiqh” at the University.

Career

Shuraim has been leading the Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan in Makkah since 1991 after he was made a prayer leader and Friday preacher by King Fard at the Grand Mosque.

In 1992, he was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Makkah. Later, he was made to teach at the Holy Masjid al-Haram.

An author of many books on Aqedah, Fiqh, and Arabic poetry, he travels around the world to give lectures.

Family

Saud Al-Shuraim has great respect for his mother for having raised him with great love and affection during difficult times.  He lost his father in early childhood. He believes his wife has proved to be his best companion.

Sheikh Shuraim Wife

In an interview with the Al Watan newspaper, when asked about his wife’s role in his success, Shuraim stated:

Before I say something about my wife, I can’t forget my mother’s love and mercy for me in my childhood and youth as well; As she raised me in orphanage in childhood… her love is a tonic for me. May Allah shower His mercy upon her as she did with me when I was a child.
And as for my wife, she has proven herself to be the best companion for me in happiness and sorrow, she is there when I need her, cheers me up, and tries her best to lighten my sorrows. May Allah include this in her good deeds.

Why Sheikh Shuraim Resigned?

The 57-year-old Imam, Sheikh Shuraim, is believed to have resigned due to his age. But in 2018, on April 6th, to be precise the Saudi authorities closed his Twitter account after he made a comment on social and political issues happening in the kingdom that he believed were against Islamic teachings.
